SFDW ’16: A Recap
Last week there was something about the Bay that inspired us, and that thing was San Francisco Design Week. Seven days of happy hours, panels, critiques, studio tours, and get togethers all centered around the various realms of design that we invest our lives in. Noise 13 was proud to have our hand in several of these fantastic events. Here’s a little recap of our week at #SFDW:
Thursday, June 2nd: It all began at the Opening Reception party at YBCA in SoMa. The mood was set with glowing purple lighting and projections of the various “blobs” moving through our beloved city as house music thumped from the DJ booth in the background. Noise 13 contributed four large black boxes (built by our friends at 7 Hills) that glowed with blacklight paint as guests scrawled their signature calligraphy, doodles, and drawings. Fort Point Beer and signature drinks from Rye on the Road, like the AIGA Mule, were served up alongside delicious tiny bites provided by La Cocina that had people lining up to get a taste (fried chicken sliders, anyone?) The room was packed and spirits were high as guests mixed and mingled to celebrate the beginning of an exciting week to come.
Friday, June 3rd: Our very own Noisemaker and Creative Director, Christine Lee, brought her Show + Tell design critique session to the Noise studio for a special SFDW edition. Show + Tell is a safe, friendly space for designers to share their works in progress and get the feedback they need maximize their potential. A fun and lively discussion ensued as everyone sipped on (more!) Fort Point Beer and enjoyed some tasty snacks. We’re always happy to open our studio up for these great gatherings, thanks to Christine for organizing!
Wednesday, June 8th: Fast forward through a week of touring studios and sharing ideas and you’ll find yourself back at Noise 13 for our panel discussion, “You Can’t Specialize in Everything: Collaborating with External Partners”, featuring our very own Dava Guthmiller, Gamma Nine photographer Marc Fiorito, Tami Anderson of Grow Marketing, and strategist Miriam Stone of Brand Plume. Guests gathered around as the panel touched on some of the most challenging areas of navigating partnerships, like how to bring partners in on a project, delegating, and staying transparent with clients as well as each other. Q & A brought up some great topics, including how to budget and work with people with different styles. The answers from the panel were honest and invaluable and everyone left with a fresh understanding of maneuvering partnerships in the design (or any) industry. Oh yeah, and there was Fort Point Beer flowing freely.
Thursday, June 9th: It all ends at the re:think 2016 VMA Design Conference where Dava kicked off the morning with another panel of esteemed designers discussing the ever-evolving world of design and how to be successful in it. The all day conference took place at The Midway and provided a wealth of information for all of those in attendance. Come 5pm the Cheese-or-Font-due Evening Party provided guests with the opportunity to network with industry professionals and exhibitors while enjoying (probably more Fort Point Beer) and hors d’oeuvres.
Cheers to an eventful week of knowledge and networking! We can’t wait for next year.
*Special thank you to everyone else who partnered with us to make this week amazing, including (but not limited to): Encanto Pisco, Dandelion Chocolate, FLOR, Janus Et Cie, Yeah! Rentals, Cibo, Salesforce, and San Francisco Design Center.
